Supporting the 9/11 Heroes Run

by Michael Fallon, Customer Business Manager, Military Sales, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products

Here in the United States as we mark the anniversary of September 11, 2001, we are paying special tribute to the men and women who serve our country, and those who serve as first responders.  In honoring the many contributions and sacrifices of these heroes, who play such a critical role in our communities, my colleagues and I in the Johnson & Johnson Family of Consumer Companies are proud to help sponsor the Travis Manion Foundation’s 9/11 Heroes Run, which is taking place at a host of locations across the U.S.

The Travis Manion Foundation was founded by a mother shortly after losing her son, Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, in Iraq on Apr. 29, 2007.  Inspired by the last words her son spoke before leaving for his deployment, “If Not Me, Then Who…,” Travis’ mother, Janet Manion, founded the Travis Manion Foundation with the goal of honoring the fallen by challenging the living to live by her son’s motto, and providing help for the families of other fallen service members.  After Janet Manion’s passing in 2012, the Travis Manion Foundation staff continues her tireless work in assisting members of the military community, and encouraging young people to make a difference in their communities.

As an employee of the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies, and as someone who works with our Veterans Leadership Council employee resource group at Johnson & Johnson, I am proud to be part of the effort to support the Travis Manion Foundation’s  9/11 Heroes Run.  My colleagues in our consumer organization —  Jamie Hallenbeck, Customer Business Manager, Military Sales for Hawaii; Ed Albies, Customer Promotion Manager, Military & Specialty Channels;  and Mary Grace, Customer Business Analyst for Military Sales in Hawaii – joined me in this effort and worked tirelessly to organize our participation in these events.

As part of our commitment, we have delivered 500 Survival Straps to Travis Manion 9/11 runs, as well as 1,200 sample bags that include NEUTROGENA®, AVEENO®, LISTERINE®, TYLENOL® and MOTRIN® products from our operating companies.  Each survival strap and sample bag included a message of support.  We have been and will be setting up tables at the 9/11 Heroes Runs in San Diego, California; Orlando, Florida; Virginia Beach, Virginia and Doylestown, Pennsylvania to deliver these items to the military and civilian communities at the race locations.  In addition, many Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies employees are participating in the races as runners.

Why are we sponsoring these races and running in them?  Travis Manion’s commitment to make a difference in the world echoes our commitment as Johnson & Johnson employees to make a difference in our communities and to help those in need.  As a company founded by the younger brothers of military veterans over 127 years ago, Johnson & Johnson has a more than a century-long heritage of supporting those who serve, of helping veterans, and of supporting first responders and helping to facilitate their training.  Each of us, as we remember our fallen comrades and pay tribute to those who serve their country and their community, is honored to be able to show our support, and to do our part to help our local veterans’ communities.

If not us, then who?
